7 Common Blunders Salespeople Make

When we get into a sales career  we commit lot of blunders and mistakes. We carry along with us lot of wrong assumptions and most of us learn from those mistakes and that make us more wiser salespeople. So what are those 7 common blunders that we often make?

Blunder #1 Thinking what the client tells you is the exact problem
We often think that the client is being honest about why he is not interested in your offering. But he might be lying to you in order to hide the exact reason . He might say that he did not like the colour of the product but actually he might not be able to afford it. So as a salesperson you need to put an extra effort to understand the exact problem and try to find a solution for it.

Blunder #2 Talking and talking and talking.......
I have often heard people say to a talkative person, "You are good for sales". I disagree. It might help you in certain situations but not all. Salespeople often think they need to be talking all the time but actually they should be listening and asking questions. I used to feel a sense of achievement whenever I spoke less and the client spoke more during a sales call.

Blunder #3 Not asking the tough questions
We often hesitate to ask the hard and tough questions to our clients and those questions may cost us a huge deal at times. While handling objections very few take the courage to ask what is the competitor's offer or what price are you looking for etc. You may or may not get a response which you can use for your benefit but its still worth a try!

Blunder #4 Giving too much information to the client
Your main aim is to find out whether the client is going to buy from you or not. It is a sheer waste of time to keep on educating the client, when he has no intention to buy from you.Sell now.Educate later.

Blunder #5 Trying to read minds
Now this is common with people who have been in sales for a long time. They think they have seen it all and start assuming things. These wrong assumptions about the client can lead you into trouble. Always get the exact ideas and feelings from the client and ask for clarity if things are vague.

Blunder #6 Ignoring the influencers and decision makers
It is often really hard to get to meet clients who are in higher positions. So we often find it convenient to interact with the people at a level below them and convince ourselves that we did what we could. But to be successful you really have to reach out to those people at the top.

Blunder#7 Hoping that the client will not notice a goof-up you made
The only way you can avoid a problem is by addressing it before it occurs. Be honest and transparent with your client if there is a problem. He might be upset initially but he will definitely appreciate your honesty and together you can solve the problem and it will strengthen your relationship

Any other blunders coming to your mind??
