Pros and Cons of a Sales Career

If you are in sales, people often ask you how you are able to work in an environment when the axe is always hanging over your head.  Well I believe that no matter what job you are in there is an axe which hangs above your head, and if you are in sales you will atleast have better control of the axe!!

Now what are some pros and cons of a career in sales?

Income:
Pros: Sales people are one of the most highly paid employees in an organization. They bring in the revenues so they are really important for the organization

Cons: As Spider-man's Uncle Ben says, “With great power comes great responsibility”, with high incomes comes great accountability and responsibility

Freedom/Flexibility:
Pros: You need not be confined to a cubicle or an office if you are in sales. You have the freedom and flexibility to be in the market, travel around meet people etc.
Cons: As long as you have that freedom, you will be on your own.

Challenging:
Pros: The sales job is really challenging. The thrill and the adrenaline rush of getting the sales is something you need to experience in order to understand the feeling
Cons: It can be very stressful at times too.

Entrepreneurship:
Pros:Managing your territory is like running your own business. So you can pick up lot of entrepreneurial skills during your sales career
Cons:You are solely responsible for generating revenues and making profit from your territory

Accomplishments:
Pros: You have a high level of accomplishment when you are directly the one who made things happen. 
Cons: Poor performance from your part can lead to lot of stress. In short you have the liberty to dig your own grave in whichever way you prefer!

  1. Well said Cathy !! Few more add ons ! You Can never rest in the past glory ! You need to prove yourself everytime. The Counter gets to the Reset Mode on the 1st of every month (or as per the business cycle of the organisation.
    Pros : Had the Last month been bad- Forget it and Move on and do well in the current Month
    Cons : Your Last month was your career best- So what ? You have to Re-do it or even better it in the current month ! - As Targets doesnt go down (in Normal scenario )

    Work Life Balance
    Pros : There is nothing like a fixed work time
    Cons : The same - There is nothing like a fixed work time
